The Mark of the Beast

The Mark of the Beast is described in the book of Revelation.

Rev 13:16-18. " And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six."

So it is a mark that everyone on earth will be forced to receive. It will be received in their hand or forehead, and they will be disenfranchised if they refuse it. The mark of the beast is also the name of the beast, which is the number of a man's name. The number is 666.

Who is The Beast?

A "beast" in Bible prophecy is a king or kingdom,
Daniel 7:17. "These great beasts, which are four, are four kings."
Daniel 7:23. "The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth."
So we can understand from the Bible, that a king or kingdom will impose it's mark on the world.

The Seal of God.

The seal of God is in opposition to the Mark of the Beast. The seal of God is also received in a persons forehead,
Rev 7:3, "Saying, hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads." Rev 9:4, " And it was commanded them that they should hurt not the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads."
Just as the Mark of the Beast is a man's name in a persons forehead, the seal of God is God's name in their forehead,
Rev 14:1, "And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred and forty four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads."
The 144,000 have exactly the same qualities as those that receive the seal of God, because they are among those that receive the seal of God,
Rev 14:5, "And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God."
So they are exactly like Jesus,
1 Peter 2:21,22, "Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow in His steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth."
The 144,000 are also described in,
Rev 14:12, "Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus."
Also exactly like Jesus,
John 15:10, "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in My love; even as I have kept My Father's commandments..."
The thing you're probably thinking is, "But we can't be like Jesus, can we?"
2 Peter 1:4, "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the Divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." (Please see Matt 5:48, Philip 2:5, 1 Peter 1:16, 1 John 3:2, 3, if you're still not sure about this.)
Those who receive the Mark of the Beast, God will punish in hell fire.
Rev 14: 6-11. "If any man worship the beast or his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever: and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name."
However, those who receive the seal of God, will be rewarded with eternal life.
Rev 14: 3, "...the hundred and forty four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth."

What kind of mark?

Will it be a literal, physical mark that one can see? In Ezekiel's time, a mark was also received by the people.
Ezekiel 9:4. "...set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and cry for all the abominations that be done..."
So the Bible records God setting a mark on peoples foreheads, some time in history. This was not a visible, literal mark that others could see. Only a mark that the destroying angels could see. And it was put there by God, and not man. Those that received this "seal of God" in their foreheads were also spared,
Ezekiel 9:6, "Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark..."

What is the Seal of God?

Referring to God's ten commandments the Bible says,
Exodus 13:9, "And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the Lord's law may be in thy mouth."
Deut 6:8, "And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes."
Deut 11:18, "And bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes."
The ten commandments are found in the same place as the seal of God.
So is it possible, that the seal of God is not a visible mark, but it is a mark that God puts in man's forehead when he keeps the ten commandments, that prevents him from losing his eternal life?
In Nehemiah's day, all those that decided to keep the ten commandments, or the law, were referred to as sealed, (see verse 34 to see that they are talking about the law)
Neh 9:38 & 10:1, "...we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it. Now those that sealed were..."
In Isaiah 8:16, the law is the seal,
"Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples."
In Hebrews 10:16, the ten commandments are written in the minds, or foreheads of God's people,
"This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them."
This is referring to the New Covenant, so please do not think that under the New Covenant we do not have to keep the ten commandments.
2 Timothy 2:19 also says that the seal of God is received by those who depart from iniquity,
"Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."
Rev 7:3 says that the servants of God will be sealed.
Rev 7:3, "Saying, hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads."
What is a servant of God?
"But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God..."
We cannot become free from sin, and therefore righteous by our own works, but we can become righteous by faith in Christ, (Rom 3:22, 4:13 and Philippians 3:9). We are told that the seal is being righteous,
Rom 4:11, "...a seal of the righteousness of the faith..."
So what is it to be righteous?
Psalm 119:172 "For all thy commandments are righteousness."
To be righteous, and to receive the seal of God is to keep the ten commandments.
Can we therefore conclude from the Bible alone, that those that receive the seal of God, keep God's ten commandments, and those that receive the Mark of the Beast, do not.
The Bible says that the majority of people will receive the Mark of the Beast, and indeed today, the majority of Christendom believe we do not have to keep the ten commandments, only have faith in God,
(Rom 3:31, "Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.") or that we only have to love Jesus,
(John 14:21, "He that hath My commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me.").

It has been suggested that the Mark of the Beast is a tattoo on a person's hand or forehead that will be an identification mark, authorizing him or her to buy and sell. However, why would this be so displeasing to God that He would, torment you with fire and brimstone. In Lev 19:28 it does record a law against tattoos. But if we accept this law as binding, we are in effect saying that we must keep all the Levitical laws aswell, or else we will lose our eternal life.

It has also been suggested that the Mark of the Beast is going to be a microchip embedded under the skin of the right hand. Of course we may also be forced to receive a microchip in the hand. Human powers may or may not use this method to track God's faithful people, but the deciding issue as to who receives the Mark of the Beast, and who recieves the Seal of God, is the keeping of the Ten Commandments.

Can it be correct, that if we live a completely obedient and faithful life, as true Christians, that just because we receive a micro-chip or tattoo in our hand, in order that we might buy or sell, then we must suffer the flames of hell fire? No, whether we receive the Mark of the Beast, or the seal of God, must depend on a moral decision. And morality is spelled out in God's ten commandments.
