Breaking the Stronghold of Addiction
How Can we Cleanse Our Way?
(Part 3 of 5)
Competing voices
There are two competing voices calling for your allegiance: the flesh (and those who preach according to the flesh) and the Spirit of God. Let’s look first at this passage in 2 Corinthians 6:14-17
14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people." 17 Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you."
This was a command given to Israel as they were given the promises of their inheritance in the Old Testament. The New Testament takes this Old Testament command and applies it to the church. The command has never changed and still applies today. If you live according to the world and its standard of flesh, you will fall short of God’s promises. As children of God, we must live separate from the world. We are no longer living according to the flesh; therefore, we can no longer have fellowship with the flesh. The only way we can be yoked with unbelievers is to change our standard to their standard. It is impossible for an unbeliever to live according to the Spirit; therefore, we must live according to the flesh in order to be yoked with an unbeliever.
Obviously we cannot leave the world, but we must live by a spiritual standard. If you walk in the Spirit, it will put a division between you and those around you. They will either be convicted by your life and be drawn to Christ or they will reject Christ and be at odds with you. The modern theology invading the church seeks to conform the church to the world rather than conforming them to Christ. If you buy into this theology, you will never be victorious in Christ and will never overcome. The Bible warns against this doctrine and its teachers in 2 Peter 2:19-21
19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. 20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.
This chapter begins by identifying false teachers in the church and the worldly doctrine they teach. They promise liberty, but through their doctrine you will be drawn into bondage. Anyone who escapes the corruption of the world in Christ can be entangled again in the world and be overcome. However, if you heed the truth of scripture, you will overcome and will be free. Look at John 8:31-32
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
How does a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to God’s word (Psalm 119:9). Now we see Jesus preaching the same message. It is the truth that makes you free. Free from what? Free from sin, free from the bondage of the flesh, free from the law of sin and death. Those who overcome, abide in the word of God. Those who are overcome, return to the flesh. Look now at 2 Timothy 2:2-4
2 And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3 You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.
So you can see that you as the individual have the choice to overcome or be overcome. There are two voices calling out to you at all times: the voice of truth according to scripture and the voice of the flesh that seeks to conform you to the world. The world will mix truth with the flesh to convince you to follow worldly philosophies, but the truth will never mix with the world. The truth will call you to conform to Christ while the lie will seek to conform Christ and the truth to you. The deception will always sound good because it appeals to what our flesh wants. The truth denies the flesh and sets our minds on the things of God beyond this life. If someone is not willing to conform to Christ or live by the standards of the Spirit, this message will do very little for you. The only way to overcome the flesh is by conforming to Christ. We have everything that we need to live a godly and holy life through God’s word and His power (2 Peter 1).
Preparing your heart to walk in the Spirit
In this portion of study we will examine in depth the principles of scripture that give us life, liberty and peace with God. I have been in church all my life and I have never been taught these things. Discipleship is the great failure of the church. When God’s people are not taught how to walk in the Spirit, they are almost assured of failure. In 2 Timothy 2:2 we are commanded to teach these to others who will be faithful, live by them and teach them to others still. Since the church is more concerned with numerical growth than spiritual growth, we have mega churches that spiritually live like mega corpses. Getting excited, jumping, lively praise music and other activities are completely worthless if you are not walking faithfully with God. Spiritual worship is good, but emotionalism is not the evidence of spirituality. The evidence of true worship is walking according to truth.
Degrees and having a PHD beside your name does not create understanding. Seminaries do not prepare men for ministry, only the Spirit can equip us to minister to the saints. If a pastor has no understanding, he is not able to pass this along to the people he ministers to. We see generations of spiritual dryness culminating in this generation. The scriptures teach us to first be partakers and followers of the truth and then to pass that understanding down to others. You do not need to be professionally trained to walk in truth, you just need to go directly to the source. I have said this in a previous study but it must be mentioned here also. You must study the word to grow spiritually. Read the New Testament from front to back 3 times in one month and then once a month each month after that. Every 6 months, read it three times through again. Do the same with the book of Proverbs. Sprinkle the Old Testament in your studies as you see fit. Do not be afraid to skip the genealogies or things like the temple’s dimensions if you begin feeling bored. Remember that the purpose of your studies is to gain spiritual insights, not to check each chapter off your task list.
To walk in the Spirit, you must go to the truth of scripture. Read this passage from Proverbs 4:5-9
5 Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. 6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you. 7 Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. 8 Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. 9 She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you."
Wisdom is a principle thing. If you do not get wisdom, you will never walk wisely nor will you have spiritual understanding in the deeper things of God. The voice of wisdom will guide you and keep you from sin while leading you into the paths of righteousness. This is explained in Proverbs 7:2-5
2 Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. 3 Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Say to wisdom, "You are my sister," And call understanding your nearest kin, 5 That they may keep you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words.
Proverbs 6:20-25 20 My son, keep your father's command, And do not forsake the law of your mother. 21 Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. 22 When you roam, they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, 24 To keep you from the evil woman, From the flattering tongue of a seductress. 25 Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
Throughout the book of Proverbs wisdom and the instruction of wisdom is given as our protector against adulteress women. At the beginning of this study I mentioned 4 men who were lured into a trap by lust and were shamed on national TV. Each one of these men who claimed to be Christians have one thing in common – they rejected the voice of wisdom. If you watch the videos you will see that many of these men testified that something told them to turn around and not go. As a part of this study we will examine this in more detail. The purpose of the commands we received above is explained in Proverbs 1:3-4
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity; 4 To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion –
The instruction of wisdom is the word of God. The product of receiving the instruction of wisdom is justice, judgment and equity. Wisdom gives you discretion so that you are able to make good choices if you are willing to obey. Not one of these men who traveled two to four hours away from home to be trapped in a sting listened to the voice of wisdom. Wisdom called, but they did not heed.
Finding Wisdom
In order to walk in wisdom, each person must act according to God’s word. Look at James 1:5-8
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
The first step in finding wisdom is to go to the one who gives wisdom, the Lord. Worldly wisdom will lead you astray. You must seek the wisdom that comes from above. To ask without faith is worthless. Many pray, “Lord give me wisdom”, but then they fail to seek it. If you never seek wisdom, you are not asking in faith and should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. One of the promises of wisdom is that it makes the simple man wise. The simple minded is the one who acts without considering the end of a matter. The simple act on impulses and fleshly desires. The Bible says that the wise man sees trouble and avoids it but the simple pass on and are punished (Proverbs 22:3). Wisdom takes the simple minded man or woman and gives them instruction so that they act according to wisdom. When you ask for wisdom, seek wisdom. If you never seek wisdom you will also neglect the voice of wisdom because it has little value to you. You will seek what you value. Look at Proverbs 2:1-13
My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, 2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; 3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. 6 For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; 8 He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, Equity and every good path. 10 When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, 11 Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things, 13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness;
Notice the principles taught in this passage. First, you must receive God’s word. If you do not know the word, you cannot have wisdom. Wisdom instructs us according to the word. You must first treasure the commands of God within you so that you can incline your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding. This is why I put so much emphasis on reading the word. If you do not treasure the word, you will not live in holiness, godliness or overcome the flesh. If you do not read the word, you do not treasure the word. Jesus said, blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled and blessed. If you are hungry, you will consume the word. While you are asking for wisdom, plead with God to give you a hunger for the word and a desire to seek Him with all your heart. These are absolutely necessary to fulfill your Christian walk.
When you ask, you must believe. The Lord stores up sound wisdom for the upright and you must seek it as for hidden treasures. When you ask in faith, you will seek with expectation. If you found out treasures of gold were hidden in your back yard, you would get a shovel and diligently search until you found it. You would dig every day looking for the treasure if you knew for certain it was out there. The same is true for wisdom. If you ask God for wisdom and believe that He has stored up sound wisdom for you, you would then seek diligently until you found it. Indeed God has stored up wisdom for you and it is up to you to ask in faith and then believe in faith as you search in faith. If you don’t believe, you will never search and will never find. Most people ask and then wonder why they never find. There are three commands given for any who desire to find wisdom, treasure God’s commands in your heart so that you can incline your ear to wisdom, ask God to give the wisdom He has stored up for you and then search for it knowing it is more valuable than earthly treasures.
You MUST cry after discernment and lift your voice to God for understanding. Until you are at the point in your life where you search for the things of God as if they are hidden treasures, silver and gold, you will not find all that God has for you. What will you do for silver and gold? We will devote years of our lives to get an education to establish a career. We then devote our lives to our career and are willing to put in overtime and make sacrifices in our lives in order to get promotions and make money. But who will give even an hour a day to spend time with God? If you knew a great treasure was in a field that would give you wealth untold, what would you do to get it? You would buy the field and search until you found it. Jesus equated this with the things of God in Matthew 13:44
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Are you willing to sell all that you have to find the kingdom of God? Until you are, you will not find the hidden things of God. You must search for her as for treasures and devote your life to the things of God as you would for silver and gold. Only then will you find the treasures of God that will change your life here and benefit you for all eternity. Only when you seek with all your heart will you find knowledge, understanding, wisdom and all the benefits that they bring into our lives. Look at Proverbs 25:2
2 It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.
This applies to your life as well. God conceals the things of the Spirit and it is your benefit and glory to search them out. God wants you to find them, but you will not find them without seeking and asking. You are kings and priests to God if you are in the promise (Revelation 5:10).
If you don’t listen to the voice of wisdom, all the wisdom God provides will do little good. You have the God-given right to reject wisdom or walk in the instruction of wisdom; however, there are serious consequences to rejecting the instruction of wisdom. Consider this passage from Proverbs. It is a long passage, but very rich in truth so please take the time to read it. Proverbs 1:20-33
20 Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares. 21 She cries out in the chief concourses, At the openings of the gates in the city She speaks her words: 22 "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge. 23 Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. 24 Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded, 25 Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, 27 When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. 28 "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. 29 Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD, 30 They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke. 31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies. 32 For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil."
Now consider the 4 Christian men who were arrested for going to meet a minor. By their own testimonies we know that wisdom called out to them. They refused the counsel of wisdom, turned away from instruction and would not accept wisdom’s rebuke for their decision. One man said, “Something kept telling me, turn around”. Now they are in deep legal trouble. They will be labeled as sex offenders for the rest of their lives and will even have to register with local authorities each time they move. All of those men are now crying out to God to rescue them, but what does wisdom say? Because you distained wise counsel and refused the ways of God, I will mock when your terror comes and laugh at your calamity. When terror comes on you like a storm and destruction destroys your life like a tornado, then you will call, but I will not answer. You will seek, but I will not be found.
God has warned that the turning away of the simple slays them and even complacency will destroy the fool. We don’t think of complacency as a sin but in truth it is. If you are lulled into complacency, you will do nothing with your life. A complacent man or woman will not seek wise counsel or search the scriptures. They will sit idly day in and day out. They may say things like, “I need to get serious about my faith” ,but they never make it beyond the promise that they will do it tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes because there is always something entertaining on TV or activities to busy our lives.
When the consequences of sin come upon you, calling out to God for deliverance will yield no miracles. God has already intervened in your life, but you refused. This does not mean that you cannot be forgiven nor does it mean that you can never get into God’s will; however, it does mean that you will not be protected from the consequences of your actions. The time to act on your sin is now. You must respond to God’s Spirit while He is calling you, not after you have been caught in sin. Right now, God is intervening in your life to deliver you from sin, set you at liberty and transform your life from a worldly focus to a spiritual walk. You must turn at His rebuke. When you do, you have the promise we just read in Proverbs 1
23 Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.
…
33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil."
Every man and woman has the power to walk in the Spirit. It begins by listening to the voice of wisdom and turning from our ways to the ways of the Lord. When you turn at God’s rebuke, you have the promise, “Surely I will pour my spirit on you”. This is how you begin to overcome. You will never overcome by resistance.
Resistance is futile
It may sound odd, but you can never resist sin by resisting temptation. As long as your mind is still in the flesh, you will continue to be drawn to temptation and in a moment of weakness, you will fall. I know this from personal experience because I have been there. I can remember turning away but still feeling temptations’ draw. If you can’t get temptation out of your mind, you have never truly turned from it. As an example, I like to compare this to my athletic days. To build muscle, you have to tear down muscle. In order to increase stamina, I used to put a moderate amount of weight on a barbell and bench press it half way up and hold it. At first it was easy to resist the weight but in a few minutes, the weight that was easy to resist would become unbearable. It was not long before I did not have the strength to push even a small amount of weight off my chest. Unlike physical exercise, the Spirit is not built up by tearing it down. Our spiritual lives are built up by feeding on the Word of God.
Temptation to the flesh is like pushing off the weight. You have fleshly limitations and in time you will tire of resisting. How quickly you tire depends on how great the temptation. To resist, you must get out of the flesh. The battle of temptation does not begin at the moment of temptation, but it begins now. You must crucify the flesh daily and put to death the passions of the flesh so that its grip does not hold you. If your flesh is your master, you are bound to it. How many times have I heard men say that temptation draws them as though it is pulling them by a rope. I have experienced this as well. When I was chained to my passions, I could never break away. I could only pull against the leash for a time but I was always overcome. This changed when I experienced wisdom. Look again at Proverbs 2:10-16
10 When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, 11 Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, 12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things, 13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perversity of the wicked; 15 Whose ways are crooked, And who are devious in their paths; 16 To deliver you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words,
Here is deliverance. When wisdom enters your heart, you will be preserved, kept safe and delivered from the way of evil. Wickedness is all around you and in the flesh you will always be overcome. Wisdom is not of the flesh but of the Spirit. Evil men walk in the ways of darkness and draw you away from the paths of uprightness. Immoral women lurk at every corner seeking to draw you away from righteousness. Proverbs 5:6 explains:
Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them. (KJV)
This brings us back to the question of Psalm 119, How can a young man cleanse his way? Until you find and receive wisdom into your heart by seeking God and His word with all your heart, you cannot keep your way pure. However, once wisdom is established in your heart, you will be preserved. The seductress may indeed lurk on every corner (Proverbs 7:12) but she cannot enter the path of life. She can only call to you and beckon you to turn away from the path of righteousness. This is why the scripture we read earlier says, “the turning away of the simple will slay them” (Proverbs 1:32). This is explained further in Proverbs 9:13-18
13 A foolish woman is clamorous; She is simple, and knows nothing. 14 For she sits at the door of her house, On a seat by the highest places of the city, 15 To call to those who pass by, Who go straight on their way: 16 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here"; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, 17 "Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant." 18 But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.
Temptation and the seductress promises sweetness and pleasant gratification, but this is a lure to destruction. Who does seduction call to? She calls to those who go straight on their way. Those who are seeking temptation do not need to be called for they will stumble upon temptation continually; however, when you attempt to walk the straight path, temptation will cry out to you to turn toward it. The Bible compares this temptation to a bird that rushes to a snare and does not know that it is for its life (Proverbs 7:23). Before the gun was invented, birds were often caught with snares. Bait was placed on the snare to lure the bird in. When the bird perched on the snare, its weight would trigger the snare and a noose would entangle the bird so that it could not escape. The hunter would then kill the bird and consume it. This is the comparison the Bible makes to a man responding to the call of the seductive woman. She calls for you to depart from the path of life and come near her door. The one who responds to the call does not know that he is rushing toward a snare. She promises pleasant things but this is the bait to lure you to a snare that will not allow you to escape.
In the same chapter, wisdom also calls for you to turn. Look at Proverbs 9:1-6
Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; 2 She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also furnished her table. 3 She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city, 4 "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, 5 "Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed. 6 Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding.
While temptation calls you to depart from the paths of life, wisdom calls for you to depart from foolishness and into the way of life and understanding. Wisdom calls for you to turn away from the flesh. She calls you to forsake foolishness and live. Wisdom calls for you to get on the path of righteousness by following understanding. Both wisdom and temptation call you every day. You must choose who you will follow. Many never hear the voice of wisdom because they are so in tuned with the flesh. They can only see temptation. You must seek wisdom, lift up your voice for understanding and search for truth as you would for hidden treasures. As you begin to walk in the Spirit, you will hear the voice of wisdom and see the things of the Spirit. Then when temptation calls, you will recognize it for what it is.
When you are walking in the Spirit, temptation will be such a dramatic change of direction that you will recognize it immediately. The unfortunate reality is that most people in the church are not walking the path of life in obedience to Jesus Christ; therefore, they cannot distinguish between the way of life and the way of temptation. When we are wandering blindly, we will constantly find ourselves in temptation without even knowing how we got there. When you are walking the path of righteousness, you will not merely veer off course; you must depart from the path of life in order to pursue temptation. Your eyes are not wandering aimlessly but you are focused on the Lord and the word. Temptation looses its grip because you are no longer walking in the flesh and you are pursuing the things of God with passion. Now to fall, you must take your eyes off of what you are diligently seeking, depart from your spiritual walk and get back into the flesh. This is such a dramatic shift that you must completely reject God’s work in your life to fall again. This will not just happen to you. The only exception is if you begin to grow complacent and quit pursuing God again. You cannot grow on yesterday’s Spiritual food.
I was in a lobby the other day where there were many magazines about entertainment and Hollywood celebrities. As the time ticked away I grew bored and picked up one of the magazines. As we all know, Hollywood is obsessed with sensuality and each photograph had a seductive tone. As I began to thumb through it, I heard the voice of wisdom rebuking me for picking up the magazine. My first thought was to continue on because of my curiosity and because it wasn’t really sin, but then I remembered that there are two voices. It seems petty to make an issue out of looking at an entertainment magazine but in reality there is a battle going on bigger than we realize. I put down the magazine and remembered where I had been.
Not all that long ago I used to find myself spinning out of control as I plummeted into temptation. When all was said and done I would realize that I truly found no pleasure in sin and could not understand why it seemed to pounce on me like a hidden beast. I used to ask, “God why can’t I catch myself before I lose control instead of regretting it afterward?” As I put down that magazine I realized that God had indeed answered that prayer. During my years of failure, the voice of wisdom called but the voice of temptation and my flesh drowned out everything else. The reason for this is because I did not prepare my heart to seek the Lord (2 Chronicles 12:14). Now, when temptation calls, I can hear wisdom’s call and its rebuke when I am tempted to depart from the path of righteousness. My flesh still calls, but it does not control my mind. Almost everyday I plead with the Lord to give me a heart that seeks Him so that I do not allow the flesh to rise up within me. As long as I am pursuing righteousness, His word makes me clean. The complacent Christian is always in danger of falling into temptation (Proverbs 1:32).
Very few people would say that looking at an entertainment magazine was sinful; however, this is an example of what I stated earlier – the battle of temptation begins now. We are warned to put on all the armor of God so that we can stand against the wiles of the devil (Ephesians 6:11). The word ‘wiles’ means crafty, deceitful and the art of being cunning. For some reason, people have a hard time grasping that sin is brought in secretly. If a teacher says many good things in order to bring in destructive heresies, people have a hard time admitting that they are evil because of all the good things they say. The same is true for temptation. We will welcome temptation into our homes and minds because we want the things that come with it. The craft of Satan is to present the things you can justify accepting in order to bring in temptation. A little sensuality here and a little seduction there and before long you have been conditioned to accept what you would have rejected if it were presented alone. Entertainment is a master tool to accomplish this goal in your life. If the things on TV were aired 30 years ago, Americans would have taken their television sets and thrown them into the streets. What happened to allow this dramatic change? Patiently Satan uses crafty deception to put suggestions into your mind. As you accept one compromise, another soon follows. What cannot be accomplished in your life with an assault will easily be accomplished with what is presented as amusement unless you obey the rebuke of wisdom.
