Scriptures that teach the essential act of Baptism:
I encourage you to read these passages from top to bottom and allow God to speak to you through His word and not to merely allow someone else to interpret for you. The Bible says that we don't need a man (or woman) to interpret for us but we can allow God's Spirit to reveal His truth to us (1 John 2:27).
Fulfills righteousness
Matthew 3:15 But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for
thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him.
A believer must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ
John 3:
5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and
the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Mark 16:15-16
15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every
creature.
16 "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe
will be condemned.
Note: baptism does not apply to those who don’t believe, therefore it is not
necessary to say, “whoever doesn’t believe and is not baptized”.
John 8:30-32
30 As He spoke these words, many believed in Him.
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you
are My disciples indeed.
32 "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
Acts 2:37-38
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and
the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"
38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift
of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 19:
2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they
said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."
3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into
John's baptism."
4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to
the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on
Christ Jesus."
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they
spoke with tongues and prophesied.
We are commanded to baptize as a part of making disciples
Mt 28:18-20
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me
in heaven and on earth.
19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am
with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
Acts 10:
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all
those who heard the word.
45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came
with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the
Gentiles also.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered,
47 "Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received
the Holy Spirit just as we have?"
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked
him to stay a few days.
Acts 8:
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus
to him.
36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said,
"See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?"
37 Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he
answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."
38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch
went down into the water, and he baptized him.
Acts 2:
40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved
from this perverse generation."
41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about
three thousand souls were added to them.
Acts 9:
17 And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him
he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you
came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy
Spirit."
18 Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received
his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.
Acts 16:
14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the
city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the
things spoken by Paul.
15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "If you
have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay." So she
persuaded us.
Acts 18:
8 Then Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his
household. And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized.
Through Baptism we are buried with Christ and raised in His life
Romans 6:1-4
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?
2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into His death?
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as
Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we
also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin
might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
How were we made dead to sin? See above passage.
Romans 6:21
21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For
the end of those things is death.
22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you
have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ
Jesus our Lord.
1 John 1:7
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one
another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Romans 8:
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who
do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the
law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did
by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He
condemned sin in the flesh,
4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not
walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the
flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and
peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the
law of God, nor indeed can be.
8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God
dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is
life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who
raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through
His Spirit who dwells in you.
Hebrews 9:14
14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit
offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to
serve the living God?
Those baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Also note: baptism makes us an heir to the promise.
Gal 3:26-27
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is
neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to
the promise.
2Co 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Wash away your sins
Psa 51:2
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.
Acts 22:16
16 'And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins,
calling on the name of the Lord.'
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do
not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor
homosexuals, nor sodomites,
10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will
inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but
you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
--- Note: it is not the water that washes away our sins, it is the Spirit of
God. ---
1 Pet 3:18-22
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He
might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the
Spirit,
19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,
20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in
the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is,
eight souls, were saved through water.
21 There is also an antitype which now saves us -- baptism (not the removal of
the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through
the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and
authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.
Titus 3:
4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared,
5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy
He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy
Spirit,
6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to
the hope of eternal life.
8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I want you to affirm constantly,
that those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works.
These things are good and profitable to men.
--- Once again, baptism is our act of faith, but it is the Holy Spirit who
washes away our sin. ---
Baptism is the Circumcision of the Heart
Col 2:
11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by
putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,
12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through
faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
Romans 3:
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ
Jesus,
25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to
demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over
the sins that were previously committed,
26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just
and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the
law of faith.
28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds
of the law.
29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles?
Yes, of the Gentiles also,
30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the
uncircumcised through faith.
31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary,
we establish the law.
Romans 4:
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but
not before God.
3 For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted
to him for righteousness."
4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt.
5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly,
his faith is accounted for righteousness,
...
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the
faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all
those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be
imputed to them also,
12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision,
but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while
still uncircumcised.
13 For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or
to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
...
20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened
in faith, giving glory to God,
21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to
perform.
22 And therefore "it was accounted to him for righteousness."
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him,
24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up
Jesus our Lord from the dead,
25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our
justification.
We frequently hear arguments that attempt to get around these passages; however,
a proper exegesis of scripture is to read the text, draw from the text and
compare scripture with scripture to get clarification. It is a dangerous
practice to present your beliefs first and then try to explain away scriptures
that don't agree with traditionally held views. The Bible places a profound
emphasis on baptism. When we look at all these passages, can we possibly draw
any other conclusion other than God has commanded believer's baptism and we must
act on that command by faith in order to inherit the promises God offers?
Baptism is not a good deed nor is it works. Baptism is an act of faith where we
allow God to bury our old sinful man, cleanse us from our sins and raise up in a
new life that has been offered as a free gift.
